Toast!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some plants just can&#8217;t take a joke.\u00a0 And Mother Nature has a sense of humor.\u00a0\u00a0 A hard frost was predicted for the middle of last week, and frost it did, not super hard but below 30F was enough of a frost to make some plants wilt and the leaves turned black.\u00a0 So, a harvesting we did go.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3069\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-garden1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3069\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3069\" title=\"sept12-garden1\" src=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-garden1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-garden1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-garden1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Overnight the tomato plants died down to half their original height. Sigh. And some of the Romas were just starting to turn color, too.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_3070\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-garden2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3070\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3070\" title=\"sept12-garden2\" src=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-garden2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-garden2.jpg 650w, https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-garden2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3070\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">But on the good side it was a bright clear sunny day, perfect for picking things.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_3071\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-garden3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3071\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3071\" title=\"sept12-garden3\" src=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-garden3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-garden3.jpg 650w, https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-garden3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3071\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The squash plants were particularly upset by the low overnight temperatures.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Amazingly enough some plants that we thought would be very upset didn&#8217;t seem to notice.\u00a0 There must have been a pocket of warmish air swirling around the corn plants, for instance.\u00a0 Those didn&#8217;t care at all, and it is beginning to look like we are going to see ripe corn out of the garden.\u00a0 Even some of the smallest plants are setting ears of corn.\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 The melon plants lost over half of their leaves but enough stayed good that we left the plants in the ground and we&#8217;ll see what they do.\u00a0 Those were an experiment anyway, we didn&#8217;t expect to get anything out of them.<\/p>\n<p>The pepper plants which never looked good at all, the whole time, looked even worse after the frost.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3072\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-peppers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3072\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3072\" title=\"sept12-peppers\" src=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-peppers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-peppers.jpg 650w, https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-peppers-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3072\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The largest pepper is called a Gourmet, and we have no idea if it is hot, or mild. Three Anaheim peppers joined the queue, and a little pile of baby Bell peppers are in a row behind them. And then there are the hotter peppers. We don&#39;t know which was which, but they add a nice kick to anything I&#39;ve put them in. And that&#39;s it for peppers out of 16 plants. Next year will be better.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Learning about growing peppers we have been enlightened that they don&#8217;t like it too hot, they don&#8217;t like it too cold, they like it just right.\u00a0 Goldilocks plants!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3073\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-tomatoes1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3073\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3073\" title=\"sept12-tomatoes1\" src=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-tomatoes1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-tomatoes1.jpg 650w, https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-tomatoes1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These wrapping paper boxes are perfect for storing the multitudes of green tomatoes we have, 40 pounds of them. We have four boxes of tomatoes just like this.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Theoretically they will ripen.\u00a0 Once they start to show a little color I will take them out of the box and put them on windowsill to finish ripening.\u00a0 Because the boxes are shallow it is going to be easy to see who needs to be moved out.\u00a0 Just think of all the sauce I could have made, and still can, actually, if enough of them ripen at one time.\u00a0 So I&#8217;m not giving up hope.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3074\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-harvest.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3074\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3074\" title=\"sept12-harvest\" src=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-harvest.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-harvest.jpg 650w, https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/sept12-harvest-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zucchini to be made into bread today, and then I&#39;ll freeze some for later.
