The Daffodils are done, as is the Daphne.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2476\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/yellowiris.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2476\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2476\" title=\"yellowiris\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/yellowiris.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"478\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2476\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vivid yellow Iris.  No idea what variety this is, the blooms are less than half the size of the purple ones.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2478\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/purpleiris.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2478\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2478\" title=\"purpleiris\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/purpleiris.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2478\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Purple Iris, multiple blooms on each stalk this time around. It&#039;s amazing what feeding the plants will accomplish.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2479\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/poppy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2479\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2479\" title=\"poppy\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/poppy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oriental Poppies, even in shadow these are a brilliant, deep color.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2480\" style=\"width: 345px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/yellowirisbleedingheart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2480\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2480\" title=\"yellowirisbleedingheart\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/yellowirisbleedingheart.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Bleeding Heart is huge this year, almost covering the iris next to it.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2482\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/columbine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2482\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2482\" title=\"columbine\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/columbine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2482\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This Columbine hasn&#039;t been munched flat yet. The bunnies sniff around it, but so far, no taste tests. It&#039;s really just a matter of time, though.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While the flowers are faring well, the vegetable garden can&#8217;t say the same thing.\u00a0 First to go were the lettuce, swiss chard, and beet plants.\u00a0 Left alone were the spinach and cabbage plants, and I joked with Dan about what that meant.<\/p>\n<p>Evidently, they were saving those for the second course.<\/p>\n<p>We bought some floating row covers and put them over the top of the remaining Chinese Cabbage plants, and the beans.\u00a0 This seems to be helping so far, because they are still alive!<\/p>\n<p>The weeds are ferocious though, and that is going to be a couple of years&#8217; worth of work to get them under control.<\/p>\n<p>The pocket gophers are starting work on the pepper plants.\u00a0 Where once a pepper plant was, now a pile of dirt exists.\u00a0 It will be interesting to see how long it takes them to eat all the peppers.<\/p>\n<p>The other morning we had a new visitor running around on the sidewalk.\u00a0 Our sidewalk is a huge hit with the Chipmunks.\u00a0 They run races up and down.\u00a0 Much more convenient and fun than trying to wade through the grass.\u00a0 We couldn&#8217;t believe our eyes, though.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2485\" style=\"width: 506px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/babymarmot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2485\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2485\" title=\"babymarmot\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/babymarmot.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"496\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2485\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A baby Yellow-bellied Marmot! These guys live in the rocks, down the hill from us.  He was standing on the sidewalk, &quot;Wow, nobody told me the world was flat!&quot;  He kept running back and hiding under the deck outside the sun room.  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>This little guy has evidently been asked to find his own rocks for his home.\u00a0 Note the bare spot on his back where somebody bit him, to encourage him to move along and find his own place to live.\u00a0 These guys have one of the oddest lifestyles.\u00a0 They are awake and moving around from mid April, going back to sleep in late July, beginning of August.\u00a0 I told Dan I hoped he would find a home close by, and Dan&#8217;s comment was something along the lines of just what we needed was yet another rodent species in our yard.\u00a0 This was a good point.<\/p>\n<p>Oh well, he&#8217;s still cute in a rodent sort of way, and I hope he fares well.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of babies running around these days.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2487\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/doeandfawn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2487\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2487\" title=\"doeandfawn\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/doeandfawn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"395\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2487\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A White-tail doe and her fawn. The fawn doesn&#039;t weigh as much as Mishkin, though his legs are longer.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2488\" style=\"width: 481px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/babyfawnwt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2488\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2488\" title=\"babyfawnwt\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/babyfawnwt.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"471\" height=\"477\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2488\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cement wall behind the fawn is twenty-four inches tall, so that gives a really good scale for this little guy.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There was a bit of drama revolving around this fawn yesterday.\u00a0 We saw him in front of the sun room, creeping into the brush, and disappearing.\u00a0 They have amazingly protective coloration when they are still and laying down. There was no sign of the doe at all, and this baby is way too young to be on its own.<\/p>\n<p>A few hours later, a Raven was circling around the patch of bushes, evidently not fooled by the protective coloration for our little fawn buddy.\u00a0 The Raven had a birds-eye-view of the baby hiding in the bushes.\u00a0 I asked Dan if the Raven would attack the baby, and he said, yes, even kill it if more Ravens showed up.\u00a0 I was ready to go do some protection duty, and asked Dan if he could chase the Raven away.\u00a0 Dan figured the Raven would laugh long and hard at our feeble attempts to make it do anything.\u00a0 The Raven did eventually leave,<\/p>\n<p>Still no sign of the doe, and I fretted all afternoon.\u00a0 Then, about 8 hours after we first saw the baby creeping into his hiding place, the doe and fawn crossed the yard, the doe was licking her baby, and re-assuring it.\u00a0 Then they wandered off up the driveway.\u00a0 It was nice to see them reunited.\u00a0 We found it amazing that she would leave her baby alone that long, and that the baby would stay put where she told it to for so long.<\/p>\n<p>Mish is now sleeping in my chair in the living room, so all is well up on the mountain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ok, so maybe not an over abundance of anything remotely resembling excitement.\u00a0 Wouldn&#8217;t wanna disturb his nap!\u00a0 He loves to sack out in the sun room.
