{"id":2271,"date":"2011-04-05T16:57:35","date_gmt":"2011-04-06T00:57:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.wordpress.com\/?p=2271"},"modified":"2011-04-05T16:57:35","modified_gmt":"2011-04-06T00:57:35","slug":"and-so-it-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/?p=2271","title":{"rendered":"And, so it begins&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are starting our major project for this year, a garden.\u00a0 A garden and a greenhouse, to be precise, but we&#8217;re not working on the greenhouse part yet because we don&#8217;t know how we want to build it, just where.<\/p>\n<p>First thing we did was to tromp around in the snow a week ago and figure out how big an area we want the garden fence to encompass.\u00a0 We decided on 50 feet by 50 feet, plenty of room for fruit plants, and some dwarf fruit trees, plus vegetable beds.\u00a0 And flowers!\u00a0 I would love some flowers.<\/p>\n<p>The snow melted!\u00a0 The ground is still frozen, but the snow melted and so today Dan wanted me to help him with manual labor.\u00a0 I tried &#8220;But, I&#8217;m a girl!&#8221; and it didn&#8217;t work.\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t buy that for a second.\u00a0 Oh well, worth a try.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2284\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2284\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2284\" title=\"garden1\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2284\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We carried some pliers down the hill to the existing fences and took the wire fencing loose from fence posts.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Once the wire was loose along the fence line between the aspen grove to the east and the existing funky old garden to the west, it was time to get the Ranger out of the garage.\u00a0 We removed the snow plow from the front of the Ranger and Dan remarked that he hoped we wouldn&#8217;t need to plow snow any more this year.\u00a0 I told him if it snows again we just won&#8217;t go anywhere until it melted.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2286\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2286\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2286\" title=\"garden2\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The trees on the left side of the picture will probably need to be cut down, but we haven&#039;t decided that yet.  The aspens and old fruit trees definitely need to go.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2287\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2287\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2287\" title=\"garden3\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dan wrapped the winch hook around the first corner post.  I had the winch control, which had two directions, in and out.  I could figure that one out!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Moment later, the first pole was out of the ground, and laying to the right side.\u00a0 Success!\u00a0 We thought, this was going to be quick and easy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2288\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2288\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2288\" title=\"garden6\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2288\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The post was a lot taller than I thought it would be.  We&#039;re thinking about installing an 8&#039; fence, which means the posts will need to be 10&#039; long, and set in concrete.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2289\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2289\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2289\" title=\"garden11\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Using a tow rope, we wove it through the wire fencing to give us more &#039;breaking points&#039; on the wire, and then Dan simply drove forward, removing most of the fencing which we had already loosened from the fence posts.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We folded the wire up on the ground next to the collection of fence posts.\u00a0 Some of the posts didn&#8217;t come out &#8211; either because the ground was frozen or because some plants had grown up around them, anchoring them firmly into place.\u00a0 When the contractor is here with the backhoe, digging the fence line for the underground gopher fence, he can remove those remaining fence posts easily.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2291\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2291\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2291\" title=\"garden12\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The fencing is being drug through the grass.  The house is above the garden space and Oro was watching us from his window, a birds&#039; eye view if there ever was one.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2292\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2292\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2292\" title=\"garden13\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2292\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oh look, there was a very large beaver chewing up the aspen tree.  No wait, that was Dan with a swede saw.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Then it was time to try an experiment and answer a question.\u00a0 Could the Ranger pull out the stump on the trees we intend to cut down?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2294\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2294\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2294\" title=\"garden17\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dan hooked the winch to the aspen trunk and pulled.   The Ranger dug a couple of nice holes spinning it&#039;s wheels as the winch pulled the vehicle closer to the tree stump.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Oh well, something else for the contractor to do with his much larger piece of equipment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2295\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2295\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2295\" title=\"garden18\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden18.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2295\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The tow rope attached to the downed tree made short work of dragging it across the grass towards the aspen grove.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2296\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden20.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2296\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2296\" title=\"garden20\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dan, sizing up the next tree and deciding which way it wanted to fall.  Might as well cut it so that it falls the way it already wants to fall.  Getting into arguments with trees is always a losing proposition.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2297\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2297\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2297\" title=\"garden21\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2297\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saw, saw, saw, saw....<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2298\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2298\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2298\" title=\"garden22\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden22.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2298\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oh no, it fell right on the garden fence!  An excellent example of exactly why we want trees close enough to the garden to be cut down.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It was a good thing we wanted to remove the rotten garden fence boards anyway.\u00a0 Two trees down, several more to go.\u00a0 I actually cut down the next two small aspen trees, and then Dan cut down the pear tree next to them.\u00a0 This poor tree gets mauled by the bears every year since we moved here, and at this point there are very few branches left that would bear fruit.\u00a0 And if they did bear fruit, the bear would get them and not us.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2300\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2300\" title=\"garden23\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden23.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2300\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I cut down the apple tree and Dan hauled it away.  Team work.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After cleaning up some remaining branches and boards, that was enough and we called it a day as far as the garden project went.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2302\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden26.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2302\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2302\" title=\"garden26\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/garden26.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mostly we have some brush to remove, but the first batch of trees small enough for us to handle have been removed, and the garden space is opening up.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Next on our agenda will be to remove the chicken wire fencing and old rotten boards surrounding the existing smaller garden space.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after we came inside, it started to precipitate outside, a mix of rain and snow.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t care, it can do that if it wants to &#8211; spring is here, and our garden has been started.\u00a0 There isn&#8217;t much green showing up here on the mountain, just small blades of grass only visible if you push the tall dead grass away.\u00a0 It will transform quickly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are starting our major project for this year, a garden.\u00a0 A garden and a greenhouse, to be precise, but we&#8217;re not working on the greenhouse part yet because we don&#8217;t know how we want to build it, just where.
