She moved amazingly quickly. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>What&#8217;s really funny about this is that she&#8217;s so brave when we are putting more suet out on this same tree.\u00a0 She stays very close and keeps a sharp eye on those proceedings, and will land on the suet feeder before we&#8217;ve moved away.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2114\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/snowygrouse.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2114\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2114\" title=\"snowygrouse\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/snowygrouse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A female Ruffed Grouse showing how protective her coloring is against the snowy branches of the bush.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the heavy cover behind her bush is her suitor, all fanned and fluffed.\u00a0 He&#8217;s been that way since last night when Dan saw them in and underneath a Douglas Fir.\u00a0 He has a while to wait until spring, but he&#8217;s keeping up the show until then, I suspect.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2115\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/snowybranches.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2115\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2115\" title=\"snowybranches\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/snowybranches.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snow piles up on conifer branches, bending them down from the weight of millions of tiny ice crystals.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of my favorite views is to stand under a towering tree and look at bright blue winter sky, white snow, and dark green shiny needles.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2116\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/snowyplum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2116\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2116\" title=\"snowyplum\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/snowyplum.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A couple of days ago we had frosty fog, which coats every surface.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The frost gives snow flakes something to adhere to.\u00a0 This plum tree next to our bedroom window is especially lacy.<\/p>\n<p>We aren&#8217;t seeing a lot of accumulation but frequently snow has been falling.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2117\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/snowyponderosa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2117\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2117\" title=\"snowyponderosa\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/snowyponderosa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2117\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frosty Ponderosa needles, and snow piled up on top, with sunshine behind.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2118\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/snowyshadows.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2118\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2118\" title=\"snowyshadows\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/snowyshadows.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snow and shadows, the whole world is shades of pastel blue and white.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_2119\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/snowygrass.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2119\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2119\" title=\"snowygrass\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/12\/snowygrass.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"383\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tall, ripe grass seeds hiding under a blanket of seeds, waiting to be discovered by any number of seed-eaters.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We love the first day of Winter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Happy Winter Solstice!\u00a0 Now the days can start getting longer again.\u00a0 Time to start a new bird list for the new year.\u00a0 We have all the usual suspects around the house.\u00a0 It&#8217;s always fun to go for a drive and see who we can add to the list first.
