{"id":1792,"date":"2010-08-24T18:41:47","date_gmt":"2010-08-25T02:41:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.wordpress.com\/?p=1792"},"modified":"2010-08-24T18:41:47","modified_gmt":"2010-08-25T02:41:47","slug":"picnic-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/?p=1792","title":{"rendered":"Picnic Trip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last Friday the weather forecast was excellent, and so we set off on a mini-adventure.\u00a0 A picnic.\u00a0 We drove west up into the larger mountains &#8211; destination:\u00a0 North Cascades National Park. \u00a0 We always migrate towards mountains, given an option.\u00a0 In addition to a picnic lunch, we also planned on a walk high in the mountains.\u00a0 That didn&#8217;t work out because we didn&#8217;t exactly know where we were going.\u00a0 That&#8217;s half the fun of an adventure!<\/p>\n<p>Since our walk turned into a fact-finding mission, we headed further west, out of the mountains, to the national park headquarters and visitor center. The fact we didn&#8217;t want to stop driving our new car was certainly a factor!\u00a0 We picked up a map which described the trail head for the high mountain walk we want to take someday, and learned that the direction we had planned on going would have been extremely steep.\u00a0 Now we know that the other direction will be necessary.<\/p>\n<p>And while we were at the headquarters, we set off on a River Loop walk which started and ended at the visitor center.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1810\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/ice-field.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1810\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1810\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/ice-field.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1810\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Under the clouds lives an ice field, high at the top of the mountain range.  Most of the glaciers have disappeared in this park like they have in so many places around the world.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Heading down the hill, we entered a shaded world lushly carpeted with green in every shade.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1815\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/green-carpet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1815\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1815\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/green-carpet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tall conifers make the canopy of shade.  Breaks in the canopy make pockets of light.  And everywhere, moss carpets the ground, rocks, downed trees.  It is like viewing the world from inside an Emerald.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1817\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/hidden_rock.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1817\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1817\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/hidden_rock.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1817\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The trail follows the contour of a hillside, high above the forest floor.  Hidden beneath the moss, two large boulders with small trees starting to grow.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1822\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/forest-trail2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1822\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1822\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/forest-trail2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking back up the trail, the trees seem to go on forever.  Would that it were so.  This type of woods is highly endangered on the entire west coast.  This particular woods has been logged in the past.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1818\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/layers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1818\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1818\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/layers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1818\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lacy vine maples are part of the understory growth in this grove of trees.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1819\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/tipped-over-tree.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1819\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1819\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/tipped-over-tree.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1819\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These large conifers have shallow root systems.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1821\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/forest-trail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1821\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1821\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/forest-trail.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Large sword ferns occupy almost all open spaces between the trees.  Some of these large ferns were over four feet tall and nine feet in diameter.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A mile into our walk, I asked Dan, &#8220;Are we going to have a river on our River Loop?&#8221;\u00a0 He laughed.\u00a0 We had watched &#8220;Jurassic Park&#8221; the night before.<\/p>\n<p>The sound of water grew louder and we emerged onto the banks of the Skagit River.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1826\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/riverloop1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1826\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1826\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/riverloop1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A gravel bar on our side of the river was submerged by a foot of rushing water.
