{"id":1782,"date":"2010-08-15T13:48:30","date_gmt":"2010-08-15T21:48:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.wordpress.com\/?p=1782"},"modified":"2010-08-15T13:48:30","modified_gmt":"2010-08-15T21:48:30","slug":"peek-a-boo-is-instinctive-behavior","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/?p=1782","title":{"rendered":"Peek-a-boo is Instinctive Behavior"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wonder if anybody has ever done a study on the instinctive behavior, &#8220;peek-a-boo.&#8221;\u00a0 While this is something that people teach their babies, all other creatures seem to come by the game naturally.\u00a0 I wonder if I can get a government grant to study this subject.\u00a0 Cats, in particular, adore this game,\u00a0 but only when they aren&#8217;t being aloof and dignified.<\/p>\n<p>Take, for instance, Lewis&#8217;s Woodpeckers.\u00a0 These birds fly like a crow, act like a flycatcher, but are actually a woodpecker that plays peek-a-boo.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1793\" style=\"width: 342px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1793\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1793\" title=\"lewis1\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"316\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Perched atop a telephone pole, in silhouette against the sky, the large beak is a clue to this species type.  The faintest hint of red on top of the head, gleaming in the bright sunshine - no other colors are visible... &quot;Hmmm, what a drab bird,&quot; you say to yourself.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Let the game begin!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1794\" style=\"width: 304px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1794\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1794\" title=\"lewis2\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&quot;Hark, humans at 6 o&#039;clock&quot;  Viola, the drab woodpecker shows it&#039;s colors while sizing up the competition for the new game.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A dark head, iridescent deep green, white chin fading into a pale rose pink which darkens to a deep rose, and then bright green coverts under the tail.\u00a0 The only person who thinks this is a drab woodpecker is somebody who hasn&#8217;t actually looked at one.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1796\" style=\"width: 321px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1796\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1796\" title=\"lewis3\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1796\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Score one for the bird!  Clever use of a tree branch in round one of the game.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1797\" style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1797\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1797\" title=\"lewis4\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"434\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1797\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rats, the human changed trajectory, and scores!  Tie game. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>Round two begins.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1799\" style=\"width: 380px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1799\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1799\" title=\"lewis5\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"370\" height=\"354\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fast swap around the back side of the branch, and peek - score two for the bird!<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1800\" style=\"width: 263px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1800\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1800\" title=\"lewis6\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"304\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1800\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Human moves, but bird counters.  Another branch is called into play.  Another score for the bird!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Obviously a pro at work, here.\u00a0 What technique!\u00a0 What finesse!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1801\" style=\"width: 388px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1801\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1801\" title=\"lewis7\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/lewis7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"378\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1801\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The final play of the match, head over shoulder and peeking far right around tree branch.  Double points awarded for flexibility and style.  Final Score:  Bird 5 Human 1<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Bird watching is definitely a sport, and everybody enjoys the challenge.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1803\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/looking-downriver.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1803\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1803\" title=\"looking-downriver\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/08\/looking-downriver.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1803\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We went for a walk this morning on the road which parallels the river.
