{"id":1633,"date":"2010-06-13T08:59:08","date_gmt":"2010-06-13T16:59:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.wordpress.com\/?p=1633"},"modified":"2010-06-13T08:59:08","modified_gmt":"2010-06-13T16:59:08","slug":"mountain-trails-and-tails-and-tales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/?p=1633","title":{"rendered":"Mountain Trails and Tails and Tales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday we went up into the mountains to look and listen for birds calling at the higher elevations.\u00a0 It was a beautiful day to get out and about, and we needed the change in scenery.<\/p>\n<p>Before we headed to the mountains, we stopped by a very large Aspen grove near a swamp to listen for Least Flycatchers and Veery, and Wilson&#8217;s Snipe.\u00a0 We saw three Snipe cross the road just as we left, right after I had suggested stopping by the river to listen for Snipe diving.\u00a0 Dan&#8217;s comment was, &#8220;Why would we do that?\u00a0 There&#8217;s a perfectly good swamp right there,&#8221; pointing across the road, and then three Snipe came zooming right in front of our car, hot on each other&#8217;s tail.\u00a0 Yep, it was a perfectly good swamp, alright.<\/p>\n<p>Since we were skunked on finding the other two species, we will have to drive down south next weekend to listen to Veery singing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1663\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/wildblueflax.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1663\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1663\" title=\"wildblueflax\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/wildblueflax.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In a field of weeds, where we parked the car to listen for those three species of birds were all these Wild Blue Flax.  And yes, they can be used to make linen thread after a long process.  I think I&#039;d rather just admire the beautiful flowers and buy linen thread if I ever need it for a weaving project.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The mountain passes near here have some really nice forest roads for strolling.\u00a0 The sounds and smells remind us of Glacier National Park, which is not a great surprise since this is the same basic ecosystem, just without the larger Brown bears.\u00a0 Black bears are thick around here, just no grizzlies.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Blackies, a very large one came down our driveway this morning and stopped in his\/her tracks when Terry screamed at it.\u00a0 Our ears are still ringing and she&#8217;s keeping a beady eye out the window in case the bear returns.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1640\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/forestroad.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1640\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1640\" title=\"forestroad\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/forestroad.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tall spruce trees, larch, aspen, and fir provide a lot of habitat for birds.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Thrushes sing up in these woods, and their ethereal haunting melodies are soothing to our ears and mental well-being.\u00a0 Strolling along, listening and looking for birds, and smelling the sweet clear cool air made for a very restoring walk.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1641\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/june-ladyslipper.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1641\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1641\" title=\"june-ladyslipper\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/june-ladyslipper.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1641\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tucked in the shadows, a wild orchid called a Ladyslipper.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Even slight changes in altitude around here gives a new variety of bird songs to listen to.\u00a0 Around our house we hear Varied Thrush in the early spring as they migrate through, but they don&#8217;t stick around.\u00a0 Up in the mountain pass, we hear Hermit Thrush, Varied Thrush, and Swainson&#8217;s Thrushs, all singing.\u00a0 Winter Wrens add their liquid warble to the mix.\u00a0 It is just an amazing collection of sounds.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1644\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/vista.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1644\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1644\" title=\"vista\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/vista.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1644\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A break in the trees shows the surrounding hills and treetops.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1645\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/vista2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1645\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1645\" title=\"vista2\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/vista2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1645\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A steep drop off does provide a nice view.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Closer to view are rocks, and trees and more flowers, including a new one we hadn&#8217;t seen on our own property, probably because the plant requires more moisture than we have.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1647\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/ballhead-waterleaf.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1647\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1647\" title=\"ballhead-waterleaf\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/ballhead-waterleaf.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"395\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1647\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ballhead Waterleaf.  What an appropriate name.  This little flower seemed to be quite popular with bees, and I assume it would also be popular with hummingbirds.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1649\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/waterfall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1649\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1649\" title=\"waterfall\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/waterfall.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the many small seasonal waterfalls next to the trail we were on.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1650\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/streamvoilet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1650\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1650\" title=\"streamvoilet\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/streamvoilet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1650\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Small waterfalls provide perfect habitat for Stream Violets, like this one.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1652\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/granite-outcrop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1652\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1652\" title=\"granite-outcrop\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/granite-outcrop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1652\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Moss and grass, and some tiny flowers, all growing on a granite outcrop.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1654\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/mossylog.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1654\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1654\" title=\"mossylog\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/mossylog.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunshine illuminating golden moss on a downed log. Their soft needles are such a beautiful green color and they turn golden in the fall, before falling to carpet the ground.  An odd conifer, to be sure.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1657\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/oregongrape.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1657\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1657\" title=\"oregongrape\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/oregongrape.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1657\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An evergreen, Oregon Grape in bloom.  Their dark blue berries will contrast with their waxy sharp leaves.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1659\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/paintbrush.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1659\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1659\" title=\"paintbrush\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/paintbrush.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Indian Paintbrush.  These range in color from this dark red to a pale orange.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1660\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/springbeauties.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1660\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1660\" title=\"springbeauties\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/springbeauties.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1660\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spring Beauties are still blooming up high in the mountains.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We stopped by a small spring fed pond\/swamp to listen for songs, and heard frogs, much to our delight.\u00a0 Also, Painted Turtles were swimming around with their heads out of the water, and Water Skimmers were skimming along.\u00a0 Then we heard a very weird bird sound.\u00a0 It sounded like a goose, in some of the tones, but a less likely place for a goose would be hard to imagine.\u00a0 Then it sounded almost like an owl, but not quite.\u00a0 The only thing that seemed likely was what it turned out to be.\u00a0 A female Wood Duck!\u00a0 She was either talking to her babies, trying to coax them to do something, or she was complaining loudly and bitterly to herself that she was stuck on a nest in the middle of a swamp.\u00a0 For whatever reason, she didn&#8217;t shut up but we couldn&#8217;t see her in the tangled branches surrounding the pond.<\/p>\n<p>Cedar trees grow up there, in that part of the woods.\u00a0 I love cedars!\u00a0 I wish we could plant them on our place but it is simply too dry, so I think we will plant some Junipers instead, a dry climate cedar with fragrant berries.<\/p>\n<p>Babies are being born or hatched all over the place now.\u00a0 We have baby Juncos in the yard, and we saw three brand new fawns, including one that was still a little wobbly in the back legs.<\/p>\n<p>Summer Solstice is fast approaching.\u00a0 A change in season is coming.\u00a0 I love it here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday we went up into the mountains to look and listen for birds calling at the higher elevations.\u00a0 It was a beautiful day to get out and about, and we needed the change in scenery.
