{"id":1506,"date":"2010-04-24T13:01:46","date_gmt":"2010-04-24T21:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.wordpress.com\/?p=1506"},"modified":"2010-04-24T13:01:46","modified_gmt":"2010-04-24T21:01:46","slug":"hummingbirds-are-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/?p=1506","title":{"rendered":"Hummingbirds are back!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Actually they&#8217;ve been back since the 16th of April, when a lone Calliope male flew up to the front of the house and thoroughly checked out the three spots where the feeders hung last year.\u00a0 I flew off the couch and into the kitchen where I quickly made up a batch of sugar water.\u00a0 But alas, that one bird had moved on to another location.\u00a0 He went away hungry \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n<p>A couple of days later another one showed up and since then we&#8217;ve had at least two male Calliope, and one male Rufous hummingbird around.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1507\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/calliope.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1507\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1507\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/calliope.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"498\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the smallest bird in North America, perched on the tip of a Crab-apple tree next to the front of our deck.  <\/p><\/div>\n<p>This morning the weather surprised us with snow showers.\u00a0 It&#8217;s very cool outside and we haven&#8217;t seen any of our little hummer friends so far today.\u00a0 They have probably gone down by the river where it&#8217;s a bit warmer.\u00a0 Silly weather!<\/p>\n<p>We put three nestboxes up, two on the house and one on the back of the garage.\u00a0 Last year we have a pair of Western Bluebirds using one of the nestboxes on the house.\u00a0 This year we have a pair of Mountain Bluebirds.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1508\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/mtnbluebird.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1508\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1508\" title=\"mtnbluebird\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/mtnbluebird.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"486\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1508\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The male is a beautiful powder blue, like a piece of summer sky.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s too early for these birds to actually start nesting, but it is definitely time to stake their claim.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve chosen the nest box by the front deck, probably because it has the best view to the west!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1510\" style=\"width: 318px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/henbluebird1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1510\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1510\" title=\"henbluebird\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/henbluebird1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1510\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here is his sweetie, being all fluffed at a pair of swallows flying past the nest box.  She&#039;s perched on the edge of the solar panels.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The solar panels appear to be a popular place to perch among the avian residents around our place.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1512\" style=\"width: 412px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/solarpanels-n-owl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1512\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1512\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/solarpanels-n-owl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1512\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Great Gray Owl is back!  This largest owl in North America is sitting in the same spot as the hen bluebird was sitting.  There is a slight size difference, eh?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We have been so lucky to see this owl hanging around lately.\u00a0 It just makes our day every time we see this bird.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1513\" style=\"width: 405px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/fencepost-n-owl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1513\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1513\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/fencepost-n-owl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1513\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sitting on a fence post; it&#039;s a great spot for hunting in the field.  Their main source of prey is mice and we have an overabundance of those little creatures around here.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1514\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/appletree-perch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1514\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1514\" title=\"appletree-perch\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/appletree-perch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"492\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A apple tree branch makes a great spot to sit and stare into the dry grass under the branches.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fortunately for the neighborhood bunnies, the owl would rather have a mouse.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1515\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/buddies.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1515\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1515\" title=\"buddies\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/buddies.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"306\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1515\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Enjoying a snack of fresh green grass, these bunny buddies are getting along well.
