{"id":1478,"date":"2010-03-27T09:59:41","date_gmt":"2010-03-27T17:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.wordpress.com\/?p=1478"},"modified":"2010-03-27T09:59:41","modified_gmt":"2010-03-27T17:59:41","slug":"mountain-faces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/?p=1478","title":{"rendered":"Mountain Faces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spring time.\u00a0 We have buttercups blooming again; they first showed their sunny little yellow faces on the Equinox.\u00a0 Appropriate!\u00a0 More flowers will be coming soon.\u00a0 Hummingbirds are a month away now.\u00a0 We can hardly wait to see their little faces buzzing around feeders.<\/p>\n<p>We saw the 100th bird species on our property a couple of days ago.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1480\" style=\"width: 374px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/gray.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1480\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1480\" title=\"gray\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/gray.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Great Gray Owl.  To say we were blown away by this event is an understatement.  These owls have a special place in our hearts, last seen in Alaska many years ago.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This species is extremely rare for our county, five sightings have been recorded.\u00a0 This bird species is so tame; it allowed us to take many pictures, showing us multiple sides of its face. \u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to judge scale but the size ranges from two to three feet long; this bird appeared to be on the smaller side of the scale but again, hard to tell.<\/p>\n<p>Chickadees and nuthatches were flying up close and personal into the owls&#8217; face; we could almost imagine the bird conversation, going something like this:\u00a0 Chickadee\/nuthatch, &#8221; OMG\u00a0 Who are you?\u00a0 What are you?\u00a0 When did you get here?&#8221;\u00a0 Owl, doing a W.C.Fields imitation, &#8220;Go &#8216;way, kid, ya&#8217; bother me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dan was listening to the calls for these birds on his computer, and got this face from Mishkin:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1481\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/mish-face.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1481\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1481\" title=\"mish-face\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/mish-face.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Big eyes.  Of course, he has this look on his face frequently around here.  There&#39;s always something cool to stare at.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Evidently certain calls from predators are hard-wired into cat brains.\u00a0 He ran upstairs and had to think about it for a bit before venturing back down to the living room.<\/p>\n<p>We added a channel to Kitty TV this past week.\u00a0 The Popcorn Channel.\u00a0 There were multiple shows available for Mish&#8217;s viewing pleasure.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1484\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/popcorn-channel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1484\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1484\" title=\"popcorn-channel\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/popcorn-channel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"339\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1484\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This was the Clark&#39;s Nutcracker show.  Also featured were the Jays Hour, Squirrel Comedy Central, and Chipmonk Review.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Snowshoe Hares are turning from snow white to mottled brown, and Mish is beside himself with joy whenever they show their faces in the yard next to the windows.\u00a0 He is entranced, and spends much time admiring them from afar with delusions of grandeur in regards to the fun they could have running races in the yard.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1486\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/ruffed-front-garden.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1486\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1486\" title=\"ruffed-front-garden\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/ruffed-front-garden.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"437\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1486\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Ruffed Grouse making faces at Mishkin who was watching intently from the window next to Terry&#39;s cage.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A cat was not sufficiently intimidating to a hungry grouse, and budding leaves on the Service Berry bush were yummy looking prey.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1487\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/grouse-in-bush.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1487\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1487\" title=\"grouse-in-bush\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/03\/grouse-in-bush.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1487\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Munch munch munch.
