{"id":1409,"date":"2010-01-24T13:41:50","date_gmt":"2010-01-24T21:41:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.wordpress.com\/?p=1409"},"modified":"2010-01-24T13:41:50","modified_gmt":"2010-01-24T21:41:50","slug":"clarks-nutcrackers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/?p=1409","title":{"rendered":"Clark&#8217;s Nutcrackers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the name of this species intimates, it was discovered on the Lewis and Clark expedition across the North American continent in the early 1800&#8217;s.\u00a0 These guys live at high elevations, 3,000&#8242; to 13,000&#8242; in the Rockies mainly, and in the higher Cascades.\u00a0 This is a member of the Corvidae family, related to Jays and Crows, though it acts very much like a woodpecker.\u00a0 Very smart and with lovely singing voices.\u00a0 They cache food for the winter and are quite capable of digging through 8 feet of snow to find a supply of their favorite pine nuts.\u00a0 These birds have an amazing memory for where they put their cache, remembering a thousand locations.\u00a0 If only I could remember card combinations even half as well!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1410\" style=\"width: 305px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/clarks-nutcracker1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1410\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1410\" title=\"clarks-nutcracker1\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/clarks-nutcracker1.jpg?w=295\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">They are a pretty soft gray bird with striking black and white patterns in their tails and wings.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This guy was keeping an eye on the tree where the suet is located.\u00a0 They love to pick the highest point on a tree for the best vantage point.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1411\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/clarks-nutcracker2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1411\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1411\" title=\"clarks-nutcracker2\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/clarks-nutcracker2.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A better view of their heavy bill, the better to tear up rotting downed logs.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Prior to moving here the only place we saw these birds was in National parks, either in Canada, Montana or Oregon.\u00a0 We saw them a few times on our property next to Glacier National Park, and they did demolish a whole downed tree in an amazingly short amount of time, banging on it with their beaks and eating the bugs while reducing the tree to toothpicks.\u00a0 Industrious.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1412\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/clarks-nutcracker3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1412\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1412\" title=\"clarks-nutcracker3\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/clarks-nutcracker3.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"298\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1412\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I was standing under this one, next to the suet tree.
