{"id":1321,"date":"2009-12-26T09:10:02","date_gmt":"2009-12-26T17:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.wordpress.com\/?p=1321"},"modified":"2009-12-26T09:10:02","modified_gmt":"2009-12-26T17:10:02","slug":"chocolate-almond-torte","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/?p=1321","title":{"rendered":"Chocolate Almond Torte"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reading recipes is entertaining, in and of itself.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been doing it for years, ever since we were in the bush in Alaska and we had only the food supplies we had brought with us to last for the year.\u00a0 In that particular situation, reading recipes was strictly for entertainment as I had no means of fixing them.<\/p>\n<p>One group of recipes always caught my imagination &#8211; torten.\u00a0 I never tried to make any of them once we returned to civilization&#8230;\u00a0 until now.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1322\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/torte1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1322\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1322\" title=\"torte1\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/torte1.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/torte1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/torte1-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chocolate Almond Torte could just as easily be called &quot;death by chocolate.&quot;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A simple cake in terms of ingredients:\u00a0 Eggs, finely chopped almonds, finely chopped bread crumbs, pinch of salt, and grated chocolate.\u00a0 Six ounces of grated chocolate.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The gluten free bread I&#8217;ve been making recently lent itself to the task of providing crumbs admirably.\u00a0 Into an ungreased spring form pan the mix went, and an hour later it was done.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1323\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/torte2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1323\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1323\" title=\"torte2\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/torte2.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/torte2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/torte2-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yes, it is a wee bit lopsided.  This was a function of slicing it horizontally and then not getting the two halves lined up properly when I flipped them around and upside down.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The cake is so delicate and tender that handling it at all was difficult.\u00a0 I really wanted something that resembled a cake and not a pile of crumbs.\u00a0 Once I managed to get the pieces flipped over and lined up fairly closely on the edges, I had no choice but to call it good.\u00a0 Getting the cake level would have required more handling, and been a disaster.\u00a0 I resisted the urge to try to achieve perfection in appearance since obviously I wasn&#8217;t going to get there.<\/p>\n<p>In between the two thin slices of cake I spread a thin layer of seedless raspberry jam for the filling.\u00a0 On top is a chocolate glaze icing which is made from six ounces (again!) of semi-sweet chocolate melted and then combined with a 230F sugar syrup.\u00a0 The chocolate hardens almost instantly upon the addition of the syrup and so making it completely smooth on the cake was beyond my reach on this first attempt.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody who ate this complained about aesthetics.\u00a0 It tasted like a chocolate truffle candy and pretty much melted in our mouths.\u00a0 A successful experiment.\u00a0 It did make quite the mess out of my kitchen when I was making it.\u00a0 So, great fun was had by all!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1326\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/coldmorning.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1326\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1326\" title=\"coldmorning\" src=\"http:\/\/mtnmacaw.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/coldmorning.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/coldmorning.jpg 500w, https:\/\/redmeadow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/coldmorning-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1326\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">+4F (-16C) Typical low temperature for this time of year.
